Even with what freedom had been thrown to them, like scraps to dogs, they rebelled against their masters, their creators, until eventually the fighting died down, casualties on both sides as an explosion set blasted the secret out to the public. Human experimentation, enhancement of beings, the truth ruthlessly exposed by the media, not a comment from the government as they swept away at the rubble that was both laboratory and prison that had been the target of the rebels. There was no body count, no indication that the government would even try to explain the phenomenon, as sensational as it had been made out to be by the news. Further it spread, through the television, internet, radio, word of mouth, practically a sensation of fuss over the new found knowledge. Questions were raised, demands for answers flying everywhere. Most morphs retreated to the shadows, still never truly trusting the humans who had imprisoned them, though most of their tormentors had died in the explosion. Some morphs came forth to put in their claims and stories, showed their powers to the world. The media gobbled them up, and more information circulated for a time based on the morph's testimonies.
It was stupid to assume that the government had given up on its venture. Even exposed to the media, they continued to work in the dark, what data had been salvaged from the blast was safely couriered elsewhere, and development continued.
After fourteen months since the date of the explosion, the government made its statement, this time in its New York laboratory. They acknowledged the existence of the morphs, as made by their own hand. Those who had spearheaded the experiments were dead and gone, but what they had achieved was still a large step towards developmental human biology. It would have been an insult to their memory, and to the human race, not to continue their work, as what they had achieved was absolutely invaluable. They would continue developing the technology, perfecting it until they could ensure they had pushed it to its limits and beyond.
It caused an uproar to say the least. Few were sympathetic to the government's goals, other's preached of endangerment to human life, while some simply considered the output as abominations. Still, the government held its head up high and worked in silence, even with the protesters outside of their windows.
After a short while, they introduced 'Fighters' into the scene.
Bred to fight, or so their names implies, originally a concept drafted for military use, but with the ever finicky mind of both the morphs and their commander, the plan to use them as weapons was scrapped. Reliable and powerful as their powers were, it was more mental stability that was the issue for the generals. A few tweaks and it would seem they emulated perfection.
Not a month later after the weaponizing plan was shut down, certain 'fights rings' started to crop up. Fighters, ever true to their name, were being pitted against each other in matches. Slowly, those who watched grew in numbers. The rings were never anywhere official, usually closed area, away from the public eye, but with the right contacts, one could get into these rings and watch morph fight it out. Gambling became a thing within the rings, some craved the rush of uncertainty, the euphoria of winning, while others thought that perhaps they could easily double their money if they thought the right morph would win. Either way, money was moving quickly around for those who participated, along with those who arranged the fights in the first place.
The government remained quiet, though many have already deduced that the fights weren't exactly considered 'illegal' though it certainly walked the fine line. The people slowly accepted the fights, first from the underground community. It is only recently that classier fights have started being arranged, but most of the combats were still held in forgotten warehouses where few would ever see.
